5 methods to identify whether a reducer is good or not

Date: 2024-12-28

Reducers are generally used in low-speed and high-torque transmission equipment. The purpose of deceleration is achieved by meshing the gear with a small number of teeth on the input shaft of the reducer and the large gear on the output shaft to reduce the speed of the electric motor. The ratio of the number of teeth of the large and small gears is the transmission ratio.

Buyers in the machinery and industrial industries often don't know how to judge the quality of reducers. Today I will share with you 5 methods to judge whether the reducer is good or not.

(1) Judge the reducer quality form the reducer appearance

Reducers produced by good reducer manufacturers generally have clear markings, indicating the reducer model, specifications, manufacturer and other information. For example, reducers manufactured by Shanghai SGR Heavy Industry Machinery Co.,Ltd. all have the product model and manufacturer information marked on the reducer nameplate;

In addition, you can also roughly observe whether there are scratches, cracks or other damages on the reducer casing, and observe whether there are signs of leakage in the sealing parts of the reducer.

(2) Observe the heating condition of the reducer

Do you know that by observing the heating of the reducer, you can also roughly judge the transmission efficiency of the reducer. Transmission efficiency is one of the important indicators for evaluating the performance of the reducer. The reducer manufacturer can use professional equipment to test the transmission efficiency of the reducer, and the customer can observe the heating to make a horizontal comparison of the transmission efficiency of the reducer.

For the reducer, the greater the heat dissipation, the more power of the motor is used to eliminate friction, and the output power is naturally less. With less output power, the load capacity is naturally weak, which will lead to a lack of force, small acceleration, and slow beat.

(3) Check the relevant documents provided by the reducer manufacturer

When purchasing a reducer, the reducer manufacturer will provide a product technical manual that details the reducer's rated power, input/output speed, reduction ratio and other key parameters. These parameters are also key indicators for measuring the performance of the reducer. Therefore, you can judge the performance of the reducer by checking the technical documents provided by the reducer manufacturer.

In addition, you can also check whether the reducer complies with relevant international or national standards, such as ISO certification. For example, SGR has passed ISO9001 certification, and the quality of its reducer products is more guaranteed.

(4) Check whether the reducer is leaking oil

Generally speaking, the reasons for oil leakage in reducers are more complicated, which may be related to factors such as oil seal brand, oil seal assembly, shaft processing technology, usage method, etc. Oil leakage is generally divided into true oil leakage and false oil leakage.

The so-called false oil leakage refers to the oil leakage that occurs shortly after operation, the amount of oil leakage is not large, and it stops after a short time. This is generally due to the release of internal pressure, and the oil leakage will not continue after the pressure is released. The time point of the real oil leakage is generally uncertain, it may leak at the beginning, and the real oil leakage is generally a product quality or assembly quality problem; it may also appear after a long period of operation, which is generally a problem of oil seal life.

(5) Check the structure and quality of the reducer

The material of the reducer will also affect the performance and reliability of the reducer. Generally, cast iron is one of the most common materials for the reducer housing because it has good mechanical properties and castability. Therefore, it is also possible to understand the materials used inside the reducer, such as gear materials, bearing materials, etc. In some applications that require corrosion resistance, such as food processing, chemical industry and other industries, there are corrosion resistance requirements for the material of the reducer.

You can also observe and evaluate whether the design of the reducer is reasonable, such as heat dissipation performance, maintenance convenience, etc. Finally, you can comprehensively check the design and performance of the reducer lubrication system to ensure that the internal components of the reducer can be effectively lubricated.(Author: SGR, Angie Zhang)
